The empirical entry point for such inquiry is a series of research initiatives which have used mixed method, or Q-squared (Q2), combined qualitative and quantitative approaches, to poverty analysis. The introduction concludes with a statement of the two core aims of the book, namely,to make explicit the foundational assumptions which underlie different ways of understanding and explaining poverty and to conduct a critical review of the vast range of applied tools of poverty analysis and show how they may be fruitfully combined.

Paul Shaffer’s book Q-Squared is a guide to the application of a mixed approach to research methods in poverty analysis. The two key aims of the book are to ‘make explicit foundational assumptions which underlie different ways of understanding and explaining poverty’ while also conducting ‘a critical review of the vast range of applied tools of poverty analysis and show how they may be fruitfully combined’.

The qual/quant debates and invention of Q-squared research attempted a similar objective of bringing qualitative and quantitative approaches together in mixed methods research and research designs.
